CRESTED BUTTE LOCALS DOMINATE AT 2ND STOP OF THE NORTH FACE MASTERS OF SNOWBOARDING
Clif Dimon seals deal on final run; Susan Mol edges out North Face Young Gun winner Mary Boddington
Crested Butte, Colorado, February 14, 2009 – Crested Butte locals and The North Face Masters (TNF Masters) reigning champions Clif Dimon and Susan Mol laid it all on the line in their final runs today as the second stop of TNF Masters in Crested Butte, Colorado, wraps up.
Current TNF Masters tour leader Matt Annetts of Stowe, Vermont, flashed the Body Bag Glades area of the Staircase on his first of two runs for a score of 90.33 and first place after the first run.
But Dimon was not far behind. While Dimon had planned a double drop off of Cheeseburger Rock that day, he changed his mind after scoping the landing and decided to send the entire cliff instead, with style.
“I went up this morning thinking I was going to double it but the landing looked good so I decided to throw a front flip,” said Dimon.
Still, it wasn’t quite enough as Annetts was in the top position after the first run. Dimon decided to follow the same game plan but go faster and bigger. Slicing through the upper section of Body Bag, Dimon lined up Cheeseburger Rock once again carrying momentum into his second front flip of the day to nail it and take the title with a score of 90.67, just .34 points ahead of Annetts.
“I just wanted to go really fast and stick the front flip better,” said Dimon.
The run earned Dimon a $3,500 payday and the coveted TNF Masters sword, his second sword in two years. Annetts took home a silver plate and $2,000 for his second place finish.
The comeback of the day came from Crested Butte snowboarder Gareth Van Dyk. Van Dyk was the final rider of the 15 that advanced to the super final but worked his way up to fourth place for a silver plate and $750 in cash prize money in the end with a spectacular run down Body Bag in his final attempt.
“I just headed back to where I had gone before but to the right where it’s a little steeper,” said Van Dyk. “I was able to line it up and it all worked out. Hopefully I can pay off my mortgage now.”
Aaron Robinson of Big Mountain, Montana took third place earning $1,000 and a silver plate and Kyle Anderson of Crested Butte rounded out the top five cash winners coming in fifth place for $250 and a silver plate.
In the stacked women’s division, it was Susan Mol all the way setting the highest score in her first run of the morning. Mol sliced her way through the top of Body Bag and opted for bigger air and smoother landings rather than her traditional billy-goating style to take the title.
“My main goal was to huck and stomp the landings,” said Mol. “I was psyched. It all worked out exactly as planned.”
Mol took home $3,500 cash for her win and her second sword in as many years at TNF Masters events.
Crested Butte rider Mary Boddington made the most of her first ever big mountain snowboard event. Boddington worked two separate lines on her runs looking for the top spot on the podium.
After ripping through Slot Rocks without hesitation on her first run, Boddington chose the Body Bag area in the super finals to make a run at Mol.
Boddington’s first run was what did it for the judges though as she scored an 83, just two points behind Mol to come in second place earning a silver plate and $2,000.
“I had my first run completely mapped out and just charged it,” said Boddington.
Her efforts all weekend earned her the respect of the judges as she was awarded the North Face Young Gun Award for the top rider, 25 years old and younger.
“I can’t even describe the feeling,” said Boddington. “It’s surreal.”
Iris Lazzareschi of Squaw Valley, California saved her best for last with a solid run to move from fourth place into third for a $1,000 payday.
Head judge Tom Burt was overwhelmed by what he saw out of the competitors at the event over the weekend.
“They always impress me more than I ever expect,” said Burt. “The top guys are taking it down and the women keep stepping it up with flowing lines. It’s fun to watch.”
Director of Winter Sports for Mountain Sports International John “Dak” Williams heralds TNF Masters and Crested Butte Mountain Resort for bringing big mountain snowboarding back to Crested Butte.
“It’s a real homecoming of a major big mountain snowboarding event,” said Williams. “It’s come full circle. I love it. A big thank you to the Crested Butte Ski Patrol.”
After two stops on the three stop tour, Annetts still holds the overall points lead and Mol moved her way into first place overall with her third place finish at Snowbird and first place finish in Crested Butte.
