Star Spangled Butte: What’s happening in Gunnison and Crested Butte this Fourth of July
If you’re looking to get away this weekend – far away, but still not out-of-state far away – Gunnison and Crested Butte have packed the Fourth of July with just about everything, from the typical Fourth fare to classes, art festivals, runs and walks and hot air ballooning.
In case you’re wondering how to get there from Denver, take 285 south through Conifer, Fairplay and South Park to Buena Vista and back down to Highway 50. Highway 50 goes over Monarch Pass and down into Gunnison. Crested Butte is about 28 miles north of Gunnison on 135.
In Gunnison, the 30th annual 4th of July Hot Air Balloon Rally launches from Jorgensen Park, July 3-5 at 6 a.m. each day. The Jack Russell Terrier Trials are scheduled for July 3-4 at the Fred R. Field Western Heritage Center and the Gunnison Farmer’s Market on Virginia and Main Street is open on July 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more info, contact the Gunnison Country Chamber of Commerce at 970-641-1501.
