‘State of the Rivers’ meeting Thursday, May 21st, 2015
Learn about the present, past and future of the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers in Mesa County on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Avalon Theatre in Grand Junction.
The Colorado River District and the Water Center at Colorado Mesa University will co-sponsor the annual “State of the Rivers — Mesa County” meeting that day.
The public meeting will provide an overview of expected river flows in the Colorado and Gunnison rivers as well as how the Bureau of Reclamation expects to operate Green Mountain and Blue Mesa reservoirs. The keynote speaker is Eric Kuhn, general manager of the Colorado River District. He will address how 16 years of drought have brought the West to a crisis point with reservoir levels at Lakes Powell and Mead and what that means for Colorado as a state.
The evening concludes with a report and a panel discussion from local farmers and ranchers who toured California to examine how irrigation districts have embarked on water sharing with cities.
