Great news for our local and nationally growing fat bike community! USFS Approves Most of Fat Bike Proposal which means there will be a LOT more access to groomed fat bike trails from Mt. Crested Butte to Crested Butte South beginning this winter. The proposal, submitted last fall by the Crested Butte Mountain Biking Association (CBMBA) was reviewed and the outcome is positive. Nearly 37 miles of trails will now be groomed for use by fat bikes, nordic skiers and hikers during the winter months. A two year probationary permit has been issued for grooming trails on the road between Mt. Crested Butte and Gothic, approximately ten miles of trails in the Brush Creek area (including the Strand Bonus, Canal, and Farris Creek Road) and nine miles of Cement Creek Road. The only area that was not approved from the proposal is the upper part of Cement Creek, where there was a concern of interfering with an existing Canadian lynx habitat. Director of the Crested Butte Mountain Biking Association, Dave Ochs responded to the decision with enthusiasm. He says “I am over the top, crazy excited and so appreciative of the Forest Service and the efforts they put in to make this happen.”
Dave isn’t the only one who is excited about the approval. I’m sure you’ll see a fair amount of stoked fat bikers out this winter on the groomed terrain.
