Crested Butte’s Aaron Blunck Takes 1st in Olympic Halfpipe Qualifying Contest
Crested Butte residents woke up to exciting news as Crested Butte’s Aaron Blunck Takes 1st in Olympic Halfpipe Qualifying Contest. The entire state of Colorado has turned out some amazing athletes, sending 31 to the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, the most of any U.S. State. Last night’s Halfpipe Qualifying Contest was dominated by three of Colorado’s top halfpipe skiers, Aaron Blunck, Alex Ferreira, and Torin Yater-Wallace.
There is excited talk around town about the possibility of a Team U.S.A. sweep of the 2018 Winter Olympics halfpipe podium. And after watching these talented skiers last night, there’s probably a pretty good chance that will become a reality. Teammate David Wise, who finished eighth, also shares the same sentiment saying “Chances are pretty good.” Wise won the first gold medal in the ski halfpipe at the 2012 Winter Olympics in Sochi. “It’s definitely a possibility,” said Alex Ferreira.
The extra-long halfpipe in PyeongChang plays well to these skier’s abilities, allowing them to throw down their biggest and best tricks. These guys have all been known to run out of room on some of the smaller halfpipes but here they can easily fit in hits such as left and right double-corks, both forward and switch. It will be exciting to see what these skiers pull out of their bag of tricks during the finals on Wednesday.
The Ski Halfpipe Finals will be held on Wednesday February 21st at 7:30pm (MST). There will be an Olympics Watching Party at Pita’s In Paradise Wednesday so come out, get yourself a “Blunck Special,” and cheer on local Aaron Blunck as he goes for the Gold in PyeongChang!
