Daylight Savings Time is here again, it’s time to spring forward! Did you remember to set your clocks last night or did you go around and reset them all this morning? Most of us probably don’t like losing that hour of sleep but the longer days are sure nice. The longer, warmer days brings a cheer to the air and reminds us that Spring is right around the corner.
The idea of waking with the daylight hours actually goes back to the late 1700’s. In a letter to The Journal of Paris, Benjamin Franklin first proposed aligning daylight hours with waking hours in 1784 as a way to conserve candles. It was over a hundred years later in 1895 that an astronomer in New Zealand seriously proposed the idea. In 1907 a British resident again presented the idea as a way to conserve energy. After some serious consideration, the idea once again faded away. Canada was actually the first country to turn their clocks forward and start an official Daylight Savings Time (DST) in July of 1908. It wasn’t until 2 years later that DST was officially adopted in Europe. On May 1, 1916, Germany was the first European country to adopt and recognize DST. It was the height of WWI and Germany was looking for a way to conserve fuel. The rest of Europe soon followed. The United States adopted DST in the 1970’s as a result of the 1970’s energy crisis.
